2024 Summer School: The Power of Aesthetics

The 2024 Summer School was held from August 24 to 31, 2024 at the Songjiang Campus of Shanghai International Studies University.

Overview

The 2024 Summer School, “The Power of Aesthetics,” was held from August 24 to 31, 2024 at the Songjiang Campus of Shanghai International Studies University. Jointly hosted by Shanghai International Studies University, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and the German Scientists Association, the program brought together faculty members and participants from different countries, generations, and academic fields for an intensive interdisciplinary exchange.

The Summer School focused on “The Power of Aesthetics” as a shared framework for exploring human knowledge, cognition, creativity, and modes of expression. Taking inspiration from interdisciplinary discussions on explicit knowledge, implicit knowledge, and visual knowledge, the program invited participants to reconsider aesthetics not only as a field of art or perception, but also as a broader framework for understanding human cognition and cultural production.

Experts from brain science, psychology, image science, art history, linguistics, physics, economics, management, neuroaesthetics, mathematics, musicology, and related fields joined the program. Through lectures, group discussions, short presentations, cultural visits, and collaborative project design, the Summer School created a setting for cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural academic dialogue.
